Lakewood Center
An exhausting voyage into mainstream America.

Average User Rating:

Wear your sneakers for this one, because Lakewood Center is one huge collection of mainstream American stores. (It was once the biggest mall in America in its heyday.) From The Limited to The Gap, the clean, remodeled-to-be-modern center offers all the middle-of-the-road national chains with a few interesting independents peppered throughout. There's also a sea of kiosks running through the center of the hall, proffering tasty snacks from Dairy Queen and Starbucks, as well as the more familiar Metabolife and Airtouch carts.

The crowd runs mostly toward families and young couples, though you'll spot the occasional ambitiously dressed teen shopping sullenly with Mom. There's plenty to snack on, but if you're looking for a sit-down restaurant you'll have to venture to the perimeter of the parking lot, where you'll find an El Torito, an Outback Grill and a bustling Homestyle Buffet. Notable stores include the K-1 Auto Trends kiosk, with Calvin window decals for your lowered Honda Accord, and All Wound Up, which is a sea of rattling, shuddering wind-up toys slowly escaping to the parking lot. -- Jennifer George
